Juan Carranza

Juan Carranza is a flamenco guitarist who incorporates both new and traditional flamenco musical styles in his music. So far as I can see he has about three albums out. You can purchase the physical CD album or download it in mp3 form from the Calabash Music site.

His music is fiery, beautiful and he is great at improvisation! I listen to a lot of music that either comes straight from Latin America, is influenced by it or music that is influenced by Spanish and Portuguese culture. Carranza, born in Costa Rica and a great musician who has traveled the world for years learning from great flamenco and Roma musicians incorporates all of this wonderful worldly knowledge into his own music. His latest album Mareas, as well as his other albums is definitely worth buying and adding to your music library.

Richard Galliano's Tangaria Quartet, Episode #11

Richard Galliano, the gifted and acclaimed French/Italian accordionist created a music group and performed in concert with his newly formed group last year in Marciac, France. This group is the Tangaria Quartet and includes along with Galliano, Alexis Cardenis on violin, Phillipe Aerts on the double bass, Rafael Mejias on percussion and Hamilton de Holanda on the mandolin as a special guest for this concert that was filmed last year by Frank Cassenti.

The Richard Galliano Tangaria Quartet: Live in Marciac 2006 DVD captures the passion, skill and beauty in Galliano's music. By bringing together the best musicians to perform some of his standard works from his other albums you can't but help see why this accordionist has won the prestigious Django Reinhardt prize in 1993, why he was at one time named best jazz musician of the year in '93, why he was well respected by musical giants like Astor Piazzollo and Biréli Lagrène and still is today. Using the accordion in ways not used before in jazz and generally regarded as the best accordionist in the business Galliano and his quartet get together in Marciac, a famous European jazz mecca, to film this concert DVD, performing some of the best jazz infused tango heard anywhere in the world. The music is splendid and these guys really bring the house down, especially with the last song New York Tango!

My favorite songs are the mysterious sounding Chat Pitre, the seductive sounding Fou Rire, and the bluesy sounding Spleen with a great double bass solo by Phillipe Aerts and also I loved the lively Siertao but trust me, every song here is a hand picked gem! The DVD is being issued by Milan Records and you can purchase this DVD at Milan records through Amazon.com.

This DVD would be a wonderful, fun and entertaining addition to the music and film collection for any tango music lover, jazz lover or anyone who just loves and appreciates excellent music! Episode #11 is available below:

Ladies of Fado

Ladies of Fado ( As Senhoras do Fado) is the newest addition I've made to my music collection. It's an absolute gem and should be a part of your music collection as well, in my humble opinion. Every song on this album is beautiful and passionate. It's one of those albums that you can put on, sit down and listen to all the way through. Ladies of Fado is an anthology album of songs created, sung and recorded between 1925 and 1945. My favorite song on this album is the first one, Fado Menhor, sung by Maria Teresa de Noronha. With a simple, deeply sad melody and Maria's gentle, melancholic voice this song captured me instantly. But this album is full of great songs sung by the greatest fado singers of the twentieth century. Songs by Amalia Rodrigues - whom you've heard on the show before - and Ermelinda Vitoria.

This entire episode is dedicated to the Uruguayan tango vocalist Vayo Raimondo. Vayo has created his own songs and compositions with his own distinctive style; the authentic vocal tango known and sung in Uruguay. With a rich, deep voice he is able to carry any song with either great drama, somber lyricism or even with light hearted style. I've been paying a lot of attention to other podcasters out there who've just come back from this year's New Media and Podcasting Expo. One thing I've taken away from this in regads to my own show is: "How are people able to get your content?"

I suspect that because my shows are hosted on Talkshoe that if a person does not have iTunes or Quicktime they won't be able to listen to the podcast, and, well that bothers me. While you can get my show through iTunes you can get it by subscribing through RSS too. Just click on the little orange square icon in the address window to subscribe. If that isn't possible you can listen to the show through the Blubrry player at Blubrry.com or through the Talkshoe website.

Next month I will be making all of my previous shows available on the Talkshoe player and I will have them all available on the blog. So if you don't have iTunes or Quicktime but you want to check the show out, you can listen to them or download them through the Talkshoe player. Look for that in the next couple of weeks!

These are some of my favorite sites related to tango:

1. Tango Smoothouse
An old tango blog that seems to have been forgotten. It hasn't been updated since 2006. However there is a sizable collection of great mp3s to be found there. Some of them have broken links but many still work. Feel free to download music and enjoy.

2. Tango Wear
A nice little online store that sells beautiful tango dancing shoes. The background song playing is La Trampera, one of my favorites!

3. Tangueros.calabashmusic.com/world
Calabash Music is one of the best online music stores for world music. That includes finding tango music. There is a wide variety of tango, tango-related music and tango roots music to be found here. You can preview and download music from here or embed one of their players on your own site for others to preview.

4. Todo Tango
One of the best satellite websites to find information on the history, artists, music or anything else you want on tango and the culture that surrounds it. An excellent and beautifully designed site full of invaluable information. You can also find rare and very old recordings on CD through this site as well. You can read it in Spanish or English.

5. Gardel Web
For those who are big fans of Carlos Gardel, or just interested in the look and feel of very old photographs, this site showcases Gardel in photos made before 1900 when he was a child, and older photos of him throughout his life.

6. Radio Criolla
This is the very station that encouraged me to start my own podcast. This Live365 music station plays old tangos, all of the time. The gentleman that produces this station also plays old time radio shows in between songs. Radio Criolla specializes in very old and hard to find recordings. Definitely worth checking out! Like I've said, this is the station that inspired me to create my own tango music podcast.

Hopefully by tomorrow a new episode will be out. I know that this podcast focuses on old music but please forgive me if every now and then I showcase modern artists. My collection of old music is extremely small right now and I won't be able to really get into the older songs until I start working again in September. In the summer money is always low and I'm in the beginning process of building my tango music library.

So. . . . This week's episode showcases the singer Anamar. Anamar resides in Portugal and she is a fado music artist. Fado is Portuguese musical style and transfado is a blending of Portuguese, Afro and Latin musical styles. The artist herself says that transfado is: "Fado with a Latin and Afro mood, blended with Tango, Milonga, Morna, Rumba, Habanera... pleasure. Vibrant songs. Theatrical impact. Deep voice. Piano, double bass and portuguese guitar."

Some of the strongest elements blended with transfado is Tango and Milonga and that is why I chose to Anamar's music for this particular show. Transfado is also the name of her current album. I'll be playing songs from this album this week and I hope you enjoy it. You can find more information about this artist and her CD at Magnatune.

Women Musicians In Tango

It's been a little while since I've posted here because I've been on vacation in Las Vegas but. . . . . .

never fear! A new show will be out next Friday, also, I'm hoping to focus mainly on women singers in tango in the near future. I'm gathering information and looking for music. Hello, again! Last week's show was so short that I decided to do another show this week. Then there will, of course, be an episode next week and then the show will get back to being bi-weekly. I didn't list the play list for the past two episodes which I apologize for. Starting next week I will be listing the play list of each show here on the blog and also in the mp3 tag. Well, here it is - my very first podcast! Took me long enough to get it out. I've been talking about doing this for a year now and here it is, finally.

It's a little primitive and about only 11 minutes but I'm proud of it and I'm really excited about getting more episodes out this summer! Stay tuned! :)

Well, the first part is finally done. I've finally got this new blog out there. I've a few more kinks to work out with the layout. I love layout projects. Tomorrow I'll be putting my first podcast together and posting it here. Look for all future podcasts and news and links about tango music and the Portland tango community here. My hope is to have a weekly show posted here every Friday night.

Hopefully I can get the first one out by this Friday!
